Simranjit Singh Mann is a former IPS officer, an Indian politician, and President of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar). Mann has served as a Member of Parliament (MP) thrice and has been representing the constituencies of Tarn Taran and Sangrur in the Lok Sabha. He is a well-known figure in the world of Sikh politics and has been advocating for Panthic interests.
Simranjit Singh Mann was born on 20 May 1945 in Shimla, which was then under the British Empire. He is the son of Joginder Singh Mann, who was the Speaker of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha in 1967, and the grandson of his mother, Sir Arur Singh, who acted as the Sarbarah (manager) of the Golden Temple complex in the British era.
He studied in the Bishop Cotton School in Shimla, followed by higher studies in Government College, Chandigarh. Simranjit completed his Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in History, receiving a gold medal for his outstanding performance in academics.
Simranjit Singh Mann began his political career by resigning from IPS on June 18, 1984 due to protest against Operation Blue Star. In the same year, he was arrested under the conspiracy against the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and spent almost five years in jail. The cases against him were withdrawn in 1989 on his release from jail. Simranjit Singh Mann formed Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) in 1994 due to his dissenting faction of Akali Dal. Since then, he is the president of the political party.
He was first elected to Lok Sabha as MP from Tarn Taran while he was in jail. On his release, he left the Parliament in protest against banning the carrying of Kirpan inside the parliament building. He joined the Parliament in 1999, contesting for Sangrur constituency and was again elected for the same constituency in the 2022 by-election after the resignation of Bhagwant Mann from Parliament after becoming the Chief Minister of Punjab. Mann was the contestant in many elections between 2004 and 2019, both in Lok Sabha and state assembly elections but could not win any. Mann lost the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Sangrur to Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
One of the political positions of Simranjit Singh Mann is that of Panthic politics and the concept of Khalistan, where he has been a supporter of the proposed Sikh nation. In addition to this political position, he has, in the past, made public remarks about some historical and political personalities like Bhagat Singh and General Reginald Dyer, which have drawn a lot of public interest and controversy.
In his political life, Simranjit Singh Mann has always championed the cause of Bandi Sikhs, who are Sikhs imprisoned in prisons who, according to him and his followers, have finished their sentences but are still in prison. These have been the main concerns during his political campaigning and parliamentary debates.
In addition, he has repeatedly addressed issues concerning human rights, civil liberties, and the legal protection of minorities in Punjab through his speeches and political and parliamentary debates.
Simranjit Singh Mann is married to Geetinder Kaur Mann, who is the sister of Preneet Kaur, the wife of ex-Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh. Simranjit Singh Mann has one son, Emaan Singh Mann, who is also in politics, in addition to two daughters.
As per his election affidavit, Simranjit Mann’s main occupation is that of a farmer. His total assets are more than ₹12 crore, while his liabilities are around ₹15 lakh. His assets consist mostly of agricultural land, pension and rental income.
Immediately after resigning from the Indian Police Service in 1984, Mann was arrested under the provisions of the NSA and accused of sedition and conspiracy against the state. He was in solitary confinement in the Bhagalpur jail for five years until the charges were withdrawn and he was released in 1989. During his political career since then, he has been booked in more than 50 cases of sedition mainly due to his public statements in favor of the formation of the independent Sikh state called Khalistan. In all the major state security cases, the Indian judiciary has acquitted him or has not found him guilty. Mann is often criticized in public and political forums due to his ideological position, which includes his praise for Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and secessionist politics. As per the declaration of criminal record submitted by him during elections with Election Commission of India, there is no criminal record against him, although he has some pending active cases regarding unlawful assembly and political rallies.
