Anil Joshi is one of the most well-known political figures in the city of Amritsar, Punjab, having been a senior Cabinet Minister in the state government. He is known to be one of the leading urban faces in the Majha area, and in September 2025, he was formally inducted into the Indian National Congress (INC).

Early Life & Education

He was born on 31st March 1964 at Sanghe village, situated in the Tarn Taran district of Punjab state. His parents are Kishori Lal Joshi and Pushpa Rani Joshi. His educational qualification is till 12th standard. After his schooling, he entered into the world of business and politics.

Political Career

He entered mainstream politics through the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and made his presence felt as an important city leader of Amritsar. He was the Cabinet Minister for Local Bodies, Medical Education & Research from 2012 till 2017 in the SAD-BJP Government under the leadership of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal. The BJP expelled him from the party in 2021 due to his criticism of the central leadership regarding the historic protest on the farm laws. He joined the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in 2021 but resigned from the party in November 2024 owing to ideological differences. After high-level discussions with central leaders in Delhi, he joined the Indian National Congress (INC) in 2025.

He has largely participated in assembly elections from the Amritsar North constituency and also fought for his candidature in Parliament elections from the Amritsar Lok Sabha constituency. He has managed consecutive wins in the Punjab Legislative Assembly elections held in 2007 and 2012 under the banner of BJP. In the Punjab Assembly elections of 2017, he was defeated by the Congress party candidate and in the same way, he suffered losses in the 2022 Punjab Assembly and 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Key Initiative & Contributions

While serving as the Minister for Local Bodies, he has been engaged in infrastructure development in various parts of Amritsar, which has earned him the nickname of “Vikas Purush.” His responsibilities included medical research and education in his capacity as the Minister for Medical Education & Research. Furthermore, his support of farmers in their protests is another landmark in his contemporary politics.

Anil Joshi is married to Monika Joshi. The couple has two sons, Paras Joshi and Amit Joshi. As per his election affidavit in 2024, he is a businessman, and his declared assets amount to ₹13.88 crore, whereas his liabilities amount to ₹1 crore.

Controversies

Joshi was involved in serious internal controversy within the party in July 2021, leading to his banishment for six years from the BJP due to his anti-party remarks regarding agricultural laws. In regards to his legal record, his electoral declaration in 2024 shows there are two cases that are still pending against him. His legal history includes previous cases, including trivial ones like defamation and trespassing.
