Arun Narang is an Indian politician from the state of Punjab in India. He became a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of Abohar Assembly Constituency of Punjab in 2017 as a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In 2024, he switched parties and became a member of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). He has been involved in regional politics, trade, and development in Abohar throughout his career.

Early Life & Education

Arun’s parents are Ved Prakash Narang and Saraswati Devi. He was born and brought up in the Abohar district, Arun Narang’s family had a very close connection with the local business community. He has completed his graduation in Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Legislative Law from DAV College Garhwal University, Dehradun in 1980. Before his entry into active politics, Arun Narang developed his identity as a successful businessman having to dealing with the problems of urban trade and labor in Abohar.

Political Career

In the Punjab assembly elections in 2017, Arun Narang defeated Sunil Jakhar from the Indian National Congress (INC) in the Abohar constituency with a majority of 3,279 votes. Sunil Jakhar had previously secured the seat for three consecutive terms.

In 2017, Arun Narang (BJP) defeated Sunil Jakhar (INC) in Abohar. Then in 2022, Narang lost his third position and Sandeep Jakhar, who is Sunil Jakhar’s nephew, won the seat for Congress. In 2023, Sunil Jakhar joined BJP to become Punjab BJP President. Arun Narang resigned in protest due to the sidelining of the party cadre in favor of his political rival.

Personal Information 

Arun Narang still remains a permanent resident of Abohar, Punjab. He has been married to the deceased Parveen Narang, and his declarations state that his profession continues to be a businessman along with his parliamentary duties. Arun Narang continues to have structural connections with urban trade unions, market committees, and welfare committees in southwestern Punjab. He holds the assets of over Rs. 4 Crore+ and liabilities of over Rs. 9 Lakhs+. 

Controversies 

Arun Narang has a pending legal case against him as per his election affidavit related to disobedience of a lawful order. His political career is marked by controversies regarding his participation in the Indian farmers’ agitation of 2020–21. Arun Narang was attacked brutally in March 2021 by a group of protestors in Malout of Muktsar district while he was attending a press conference for his political party. He faced some temporary scrutiny because of contradictory statements on the issue of controversial farm laws.
