Dr. Dharambir Agnihotri

Dr. Dharambir Agnihotri is an Indian politician who is a member of Indian National Congress ( INC)  and was a MLA from Tarn Tara, he was for the first time elected to the Punjab Vidhan Sabha and won the 2017 assembly elections by a margin of 14,629 votes. He remained General Secretary of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, Chandigarh and also the President District Congress Committee Tarn Taran. He was a medical practitioner.

Early Life & Education

He was a Graduate Professional completed Bachelor of Indian Medicine and Surgery (BIMS) and was an India Medical Practitioner running  Dr. Dharambir Agnihotri Pandit Madho Ram memorial Hospital  in his native village of Sheron.

Political Career

He made his entry into the public sphere as  when he was unanimously elected as the Sarpanch of Sheron in 1997. After  then the CM of Punjab Captain Amarinder Singh personally recruited Agnihotri to Indian National Congress (INC)  in 2007 for state office.

In 2007, election he made his first attempt for Punjab Legislative Assembly from the Naushara Pannuan constituency but lost by 2,459 votes against Ranjit Singh Brahampura of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).

In 2010, he was appointed as the President of the District Congress Committee for Tarn Taran , a post until he held his resignation in 2013. Then in the 2012 election he shifted his electoral base to the Tarn Taran Constituency for 2012 state elections and lost to Harmeet Singh Sandhu of SAD by 4,621 votes.

Again in 2014, his influence grew and he was appointed General Secretary of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee.

In 2017, election he won the Tarn Taran Assembly Constituency in Punjab legislative Assembly elections and defeated the 3 times sitting MLA Harmeet Singh Sandhu by a record margin,  he also actively served on several legislative bodies, including the Estimate Committee, Privilege Committee, and the Local body Committee of the Punjab vidhan Sabha.

In the 2022 election he contested to defend his seat in the Punjab Assembly elections as a INC Candidate  but lost to Dr. Kashmir Singh Sohal of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Key Contribution 

First he became the President of the District Congress Committee for Taran and later the General Secretary of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee etc. which showed the grassroot support, resource management etc.

He was born on 13th March,1946 and brought up in village Sheron, Tarn Taran, Punjab. His father’s name is Madho Ram. His spouse is Smt.Kiran Agnihotri, who runs a clinical laboratory along with she manages rental incomes. They together has 2 sons and a daughter and he holds a total estimated assets of Rs.3,61,87,270 (3Cr+) and liabilities of Rs. 8,50,000 (8 L+).

Controversy

The major political issue for him emerged in December 2021, when the Punjab State Assembly elections were approaching. This was a political revolt by some senior Congress leaders against him who shared the same constituency of Tarn Taran. These included a former Market Committee Chairman Gurminder Singh Rataul and a Zila Parishad member Munish Kumar. Both of them publicly lambasted him for alleged favoritism and corruption in politics and administration. According to Agnihotri, it was just a tactic of using politics to discredit him as a candidate for the election.
