Dr Avtar Singh Karimpuri

Dr. Avtar Singh Karimpuri is an Indian politician from Punjab affiliated with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). He has served as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, as an MLA in the Punjab Legislative Assembly, and as President of the BSP Punjab unit.

Early life and education

Dr. Avtar Singh Karimpuri was born on 16 April 1964 in Karimpur village of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district in Punjab, to Late Shri Sada Ram and Shrimati Amar Kaur. He completed his schooling at Government High School, Kotranjha, and pursued higher education at Annamalai University, where he obtained a B.A. in Public Administration and an M.A. in Human Rights. He has attained various postgraduate diplomas in Criminology and Forensic Science, Social Welfare Administration, Police Administration, and International Business.

Political career

Dr. Karimpuri entered active politics in the early 1990s as a candidate of the Bahujan Samaj Party and successfully contested the Punjab Assembly elections. He was elected as MLA from Mahilpur (SC) constituency in Punjab, serving from 1992 to 1997. He later served as a Member of the Rajya Sabha from 2008 to 2014, during which he participated in numerous debates focusing on Dalit rights, SC/ST issues, and social justice. He has been a prominent BSP leader in Punjab for several decades.

Positions held

He held the position of President of the Bahujan Samaj Party Punjab Unit from 2014 to 2016. He previously served as MLA in Punjab and as Rajya Sabha MP.

Personal life

Dr. Avtar Singh Karimpuri is married to Harjindar Kaur. The couple has one son and one daughter. Before entering full-time politics, he was involved in business and social work.
