Dr. Inderbir Singh Nijjar

Dr. Inderbir Singh Nijjar is a politician from India who practices as a radiologist and is also a well-known social personality working as MLA for the constituency of Amritsar South. He is a member of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and also holds the post of President of the Chief Khalsa Diwan (CKD).

Early Life & Education

Dr. Nijjar is a son of S. Darshan Singh. Dr. Nijjar received his MBBS degree from University of Jammu and Kashmir in 1980. After that, he received M.D. degree in Radio Diagnosis from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, in 1988. Prior to his entry into politics, he was a Radiologist at Amritsar.

Political Career

Dr. Nijjar has been associated with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) since its formation and is still associated with the party till date. Upon the success of the party in the Punjab Assembly elections 2022, he was elected as the Pro-tem Speaker of the 16th Punjab Legislative Assembly. In July 2022, he was made a Cabinet Minister in the Punjab Government of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. During his period, he was assigned the portfolios of Local Government, Parliamentary Affairs, Land & Water Conservation, and Administrative Reforms. He quit the Cabinet in May 2023 for personal reasons.

Nijjar contested for the Punjab Assembly elections of 2017 as AAP nominee from Amritsar South but could not win against Inderbir Singh Bolaria of Indian National Congress.

For the Punjab Assembly elections of 2022, he won the seat of MLA from Amritsar South defeating Talbir Singh Gill of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).

As the Cabinet Minister, Dr. Nijjar dealt with issues regarding the local government and administrative reforms. In his capacity as the President of Chief Khalsa Diwan, he has helped promote education by providing books, uniforms, scholarships, and help to students from poorer economic backgrounds.
