Gurinder Singh Garry Birring is an Indian politician and social activist who represents the constituency of Amloh as MLA of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha. He is a member of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Before joining politics, he pursued his higher studies outside India and was a corporate and political professional.
Gurinder Singh Birring was born sometime between 1986 and 1987 in a middle-class family, where his father, Sarbjit Singh, is a retired bank official. Initially, he pursued a degree in Software Engineering and worked professionally in Hyderabad. Subsequently, he moved on to business management and public policy and obtained his MBA degree from the University of Oxford. Besides, he acts as a Mentor-Partner at Indian School of Business (ISB) and further went on to do his PhD at Thapar University.
Gurinder Singh Garry Birring has come to politics through the IAC movement before becoming one of the founders of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). He started as a strategist at the state level, including being the co-founder of the “Punjab Dialogue” campaign that helped in drafting the AAP Youth Manifesto for the year 2017. He participated in politics for the first time during the Punjab Legislative Assembly Elections of the year 2022 from Amloh constituency, where he won with 52,912 votes (46.64% vote share).
Birring has co-founded this makeshift library and school, which came into existence during the 2020-2021 Indian farmers’ protests at the Singhu border. This initiative ensured that regular classes were being conducted for the underprivileged kids of that area along with making the books available to the protesting farmers.
Birring comes from the lineage of Sarbjit Singh, who has now retired as a bank officer. Birring lives in Mandi Gobindgarh, Punjab. In terms of professional activities, Birring works as a corporate and management consultant. He has academic and professional connections with renowned institutions like Oxford University and Indian School of Business (ISB). As per his election affidavits of 2022, he has assets worth about ₹45.50 lakh, with liabilities of ₹4.99 lakh.
In January 2025, legal advocates called on the police to act against the MLA’s brother Mani Birring. A complaint was made against Mani Birring and his accomplices for allegedly attacking a lawyer in a polling booth and hurling casteist abuses during the fight in the municipal elections.
