Harbhajan Singh is an Indian politician, retired senior government official, and Member of Punjab’s 16th Legislature. He is representing the Jandiala constituency of Amritsar district in Punjab’s legislature as a member of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). He looks after important ministries in the cabinet of the state, which include the Power Ministry and Public Works Department (PWD).
Born in Punjab, he did his higher studies there and earned a master’s degree in Political science from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar in 1992. He became a member of Excise and Taxation Officers (E.T.Os), he holds academic degrees in M.A., B.Ed., and LL.B.
He quit his career voluntarily in 2017 to enter into politics, becoming a member of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). The career of this individual began as an organizational worker for Majha district of Punjab. His most significant achievement happened in the first quarter of 2022 as he became a candidate for legislature in the main list of the party. He is still a member of the same party till date.
His first contest for election was during the Punjab Assembly Elections held in the year 2017 from the Jandiala constituency, but he ended up finishing third. He again contested the Punjab Assembly Elections held in the year 2022 from the Jandiala (SC) constituency. Standing as a candidate from the AAP, he emerged victorious by defeating Sukhwinder Singh Danny Bandala of the INC with a winning margin of about 25,000 votes.
After he became in-charge of the power ministry in the state government, his first action was concerned with implementing the welfare promise of providing free electricity of 300 units per month for the domestic sector. His ministry tenure highlights modernizing the rural road infrastructure through PWD provisions, curbing corporate electricity thefts, and developing infrastructure structures along border belt areas.
Harbhajan Singh is Punjab Cabinet Minister with Public Works (B&R) and Power ministries. Born on 14 December 1968 at Jandiala Guru, Amritsar to S. Darshan Singh and Smt. Shindo. Prior to his becoming member of Punjab Vidhan Sabha in 2022 from constituency of Jandiala, he was serving as Excise & Taxation Officer and was also an advocate with voluntary retirement in 2016. He is married to Smt. Suhinder Kaur has two children. His total disclosed assets are ₹1 crore while total liabilities are ₹29 lakhs.
There are no significant or serious criminal cases against Harbhajan Singh ETO. According to his official affidavit filed for the 2022 elections, there is only one case with minor and not serious criminal charges, including IPC Sections 283 and 188, in connection with political demonstrations and violation of restrictions during the pandemic. As far as controversies in politics go, Harbhajan Singh ETO was involved in a huge scandal due to his confrontation with opposition leader Partap Singh Bajwa.
