He is an India politician associated with Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and he currently serves as the member of the Punjab Legislative. He is a veteran political leader and he holds a deep rooted legacy in Majha region’s political landscape. He represents Tarn Taran Assembly Constituency after the 2025 by-election. Previously also he represented this Constituency from 2002-2017.
He was born in Amritsar, Punjab on 14 December 1969 and completed Bachelors of Arts from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar in 1990.
His earlier role and initial affiliation was with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and was the MLA for the 3 consecutive times. He initially was aligned with the regional faction and quit SAD in 2024.
In 2002, when he entered politics independently he joined Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), as he had deep grassroot level roots and connection with the rural and agricultural community people believed in him for his work which helped him to establish his regional face.
In 2011 he was appointed as the Chief Parliamentary Secretary, under the SAD led Punjab Government.
He switched party on Nov 19, 2024 he officially resigned SAD due to internal leadership differences and issues and officially joined Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on July 15, 2025 under Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann.
In 2002, his debut election was in Tarn Taran, where he contested independently and won against SAD candidate Alwinderpal S. Pakhoke with a margin of 7000+ votes. In 2007, again with the same constituency he won the election after joining SAD. In 2012, he secured his 3rd consecutive win over the assembly election.
In 2022, he was finally defeated against the AAP candidate Dr. Kashmir Singh Sohal.
In 2025, there was a bypoll election where he defeated SAD’s Sukhwinder Kaur by a margin of 12,091 votes reclaiming the seat of the AAP’s due to the demise of Dr. Kashmir Singh Sohal.
He assured and advocated about the border area issues faced by the girls and gave assurance to establish a dedicated Technical education Institute.
He was always focused on Rural and Agricultural development throughout his tenure.
His father’s name is Surjit Singh. He was married to Kawalit Kaur. She is a housewife and an Agriculturalist and his profession is registered as full time Agriculturalist and a Politician. He holds the assets of Rs.6,24,17,279 (6cr+) and liabilities of Rs. 1,24,06,241 (1cr+).
His career remains free from high profile legal controversies, his only notable political challenge happened internally within his party in July 2025, which made him switch to AAP from SAD .
