Jaswant Singh Gajjan Majra

Mr. Jaswant Singh Gajjan Majra is a newly elected Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Amargarh constituency in the district of Malerkotla, Punjab. He won the seat in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha elections held in 2022 as a representative of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) party. Apart from politics, he is also a renowned local businessman with multiple educational and agro-industrial enterprises.

Early Life and Education

Jaswant Singh Gajjan Majra was born in April 04, 1962 and he comes from the area of Malerkotla, Punjab. He completed his further education at his hometown and is the holder of an M.Phil degree in History from the Punjabi University, Patiala. Prior to engaging himself in political affairs, he had gained enough recognition to be conferred upon the title of “Professor”.

Political Career 

Jaswant Singh Gajjan Majra was introduced into politics via local public campaigns where he began his journey as a member of Lok Insaaf Party (LIP). The politician changed his political affiliations in 2017 by joining the Aam Aadmi Party. Since then, he has been actively involved in various roles within the Aam Aadmi Party in the Sangrur and Malerkotla districts. It resulted in his nomination to contest the 2022 state elections on behalf of the party.

Majra Gajjan has participated in one state-level election, which is the Punjab Legislative Assembly election held in 2022, representing the Amargarh constituency. His winning score stood at 44,523 votes, giving him an impressive lead over his nearest opponent Simranjit Singh Mann from the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). It is through this victory that he became a sitting MLA.

In his role as a lawmaker, he has concentrated on improving the elementary education system in his constituency through the adoption of the state’s model of school reforms. Using his business experience, he has taken the initiative to bring about change in the agricultural marketing systems, dairy farming, and rural infrastructure development in the Malerkotla and Amargarh constituencies.

Jaswant Singh belongs to the family of S. Gurmukh Singh and Smt. Rajinder Kaur. He was previously associated as a history teacher. Jaswant Singh Gajjanmajra is married to Smt. Parminder Kaur Mander and they have two children, one son and one daughter who is Dr. Harmanpreet Kaur. From his election affidavits, it is evident that his individual profile contains more than ₹19 crores as total individual assets and no individual liabilities. His personal hobbies include the game of Kabaddi and foreign travels in Europe and Asia.

Controversy

The MLA Jaswant Singh Gajjanmajra is caught up in certain very complicated legal troubles in relation to the scam of Rs. 40 crore involving bank loan fraud through his family-owned business, Tara Corporation Limited, during the period of 2011 to 2014. As per reports, the Enforcement Directorate had arrested the AAP MLA in November 2023 under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act when special courts had denied him bail petitions previously; however, he was eventually bailed out in 2024.
