Pawan Kumar Tinu is an experienced political leader who has been active in the socio-political scenario of the Doaba and Malwa districts of Punjab. As an influential and vocal advocate for the Scheduled Caste (SC) groups of Punjab, he has worked extensively with Punjab politics in various mainstream political parties. After almost two decades of association with Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) party where he played an important role both as a strategist and a leading face of the party, Pawan Kumar Tinu shifted his political allegiance and joined the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
Born and brought up in Jalandhar, Punjab, in the family of Ram Lal Tinu, Pawan Kumar Tinu received his basic education in his native place and then pursued higher education, earning his Graduate degree. His upbringing in the city of Jalandhar gave him an insight into the social and economic problems of the marginalized sections of the society which transformed him into a social worker.
The political career of Tinu was launched when he became a member of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in the 1990s; however, he became a strong Dalit leader in the presence of the leader of BSP Mayawati. After having some ideological conflicts, he resigned from the party in order to join the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). Tinu quickly rose through the ranks in the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) due to his grassroots popularity and played an important role in shaping policy decisions of the party as Chief Parliamentary Secretary (CPS) in the Punjab government. Now seeking a new path in politics because he felt himself ignored about regional candidates, he joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in April 2024.
Defeats at Start (BSP): In the year 1997 and 2002, he lost the assembly election contest from Jalandhar South (currently Jalandhar West) constituency. At the same time, he contested the Lok Sabha election against the seat of Jalandhar in 2004.
Assembly Wins (SAD): He secured major achievements by securing election to Punjab Legislative Assembly in 2012 and 2017, representing Adampur assembly constituency.
He faced defeat in the assembly election in 2022 from Adampur as the Congress candidate. After joining AAP, he was soon nominated as the primary candidate for Jalandhar Lok Sabha constituency in the 2024 general elections.
Pawan Kumar Tinu has been able to effectively fight for the welfare of SCs. Pawan Kumar is always very outspoken about the implementation of Post-Matric Scholarship Scheme and often takes part in agitation to fight against oppression.
Pawan Kumar Tinu has been continuing to stay in his native Jattan Mohalla in Adampur, Jalandhar. In addition to his political connections, he is quite connected to social welfare organizations and trusts for education of Dalits in Punjab. His official connections include social worker and politician. He holds the assets of Rs. 4+ Crore and liabilities of Rs. 1+ Crore.
According to his mandatory election declaration, Pawan Kumar Tinu has three pending criminal cases filed against him, of which two are of serious nature. All these legal issues have arisen due to political rallies and agitations conducted by veteran politicians.
