Sandeep Jakhar is a first-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Abohar constituency of the Punjab Legislative Assembly. He entered the assembly after winning the 2022 elections. Though affiliated with the Indian National Congress (INC) party in the beginning, he was able to establish himself as a politician through his traditional hold over Abohar with his family. Now, he works along with the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) in development initiatives.
Sandeep was Born on May 21, 1976. Completed his education from Mayo College, Ajmer. Later studied for two years in Switzerland. He graduated from Florida International University in Miami. Worked as a country club manager in a foreign land and then returned to look after the family-owned farms.
Sandeep Jakhar started his career in politics at the ground level. He started his political journey by being a part of Indian National Congress with the help and mentorship of his uncle, Sunil Jakhar. He was seen holding the post of the District President of Youth Congress in Fazilka. His first major achievement as a politician was when he contested the State Assembly elections in the year 2022. After his suspension from the party in August 2023 due to various internal disputes, he joined hands with Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP).
In the course of his political journey, Sandeep Jakhar has participated in just one important election, that is the Punjab Legislative Assembly election of 2022 from the Abohar Constituency. He secured victory by polling 49,924 votes. He emerged victorious over his nearest rival, Deep Kamboj of Aam Aadmi Party, by a win margin of 5,471 votes.
Sandeep Jakhar introduced the “Apna Abohar Apni Abha” scheme, which entails a voluntary cleaning exercise conducted on a weekly basis to clean the parks and roads of waste materials. With regard to his infrastructural contributions, he ensures that the irrigation canals in the locality are widened and lined in order to increase the availability of water in areas where the water is brackish.
Sandeep Jakhar hails from a politically influential family in Punjab. Son of Surinder K. Jakhar, who was previously the chairman of IFFCO and the nephew of politician Sunil Jakhar. Additionally, he is the grandson of Chaudhary Balram Jakhar, who previously served as Speaker of the Lok Sabha and also as Governor. Sandeep Jakhar holds a B.Sc degree and is involved in farming and social work activities. Sandeep Jakhar is married to Atsuko W. Jakhar and has one daughter. In the affidavits filed for the elections, he has disclosed total assets of over ₹27 crore and no such liabilities.
As per the affidavits of elections that he filed, there are no criminal cases against Sandeep Jakhar. The only controversy with which he is associated politically is a difference of opinion that he had with the Congress Party leadership in Punjab because of his dual loyalty. The reason for this was that he had a BJP flag hoisted on his ancestral home by his relatives.
